Tianjin is the third biggest city in China with a population of 10 million. The Tianjin government serves 18 areas and counties, 126 town, 93 districts and 133 sub-district offices. Totally 100,000 people are directly employed by the Tianjin government.

The Challenge

The Tianjin government had only limited LAN in the past and expected this project to set up a core e-platform that would connect all the government departments with high-speed to share resources and provide highly effective network services to its citizens. The expected e-platform should have: optical fiber as the carrier, IP wide band multi-services exchange network as the core to support multimedia application such as data, voice, picture, video and IP valued-added services such as MPLS VPN.

Technology Solution

The network is a typical three layers design: core layer, distribution layer, access layer.

The core layer has 4 NE80 routers connected by 2.5G RPR links to set up a reliable, scalable network.

The distribution layer has 26 USRNE40 routers connected to the core layer by 1GE links to build a secure, multi service, manageable MPLS VPN network.

NE80 and NE40 possess redundant main control board and redundant power supply to guarantee the reliability. They also have very high performance e.g. NE80 has 400Mpps forwarding capability and NE40 has 162Mpps. These two routers are built on NP (Network Processing) technology to guarantee line speed forwarding while processing complicated routing protocols.

The access layer has 10/100M links for the users and 100/1000M links to the distribution layer.

This network deployed MPLS VPN technology to guarantee QoS and separate different departments by different VPN to meet the security requirement of the government network.
